The President of the Balearic Islands Government, Margalida Prohens, and the President of the Ibiza Island Council, Vicent Marí, visited today, Wednesday, September 10, the recently commenced rehabilitation works of Pavilion 202 in the Sa Coma complex. This building will become the future base of the Civil Guard Maritime Service in Ibiza, a long-demanded permanent detachment aimed at reinforcing the surveillance and protection of the Pitiusas coastline.

These works will finally allow Ibiza to host a permanent Civil Guard Maritime Service detachment, which is essential for monitoring anchoring, combating illegal fishing, overseeing party boats, and protecting seagrass meadows (Posidonia).

President Margalida Prohens explained that the rehabilitation of Pavilion 202 in Sa Coma has a budget of over €4.5 million, nearly €4 million of which comes from the Balearic Government’s Sustainable Tourism Tax, “which is now truly being directed toward projects that advance the transformation of our islands,” she stated. This investment is part of the comprehensive and cross-sectoral plan “Illes en transformació”, which allocates more than €3.8 billion to public infrastructure across all sectors.

The President of the Island Council highlighted that “the creation of this facility is a responsibility of the State, but we have promoted it from the Consell because we believe it is fundamental for the protection of our coastline and marine environment.”

He also emphasized that this commitment dates back to the protocol signed in 2022 with the Civil Guard Directorate General, establishing institutional collaboration to make the creation of the detachment possible.

The building in question, Pavilion 202 of the former Sa Coma barracks, is a three-story rectangular and symmetrical structure that was previously used for military accommodations and training classrooms. The rehabilitation project will transform it into a modern facility featuring twelve residential units of different types, accommodating around twenty officers, as well as offices, meeting rooms, training areas, and an armory. The project will also include accessibility improvements, such as an elevator and adapted routes, ensuring universal use.

This investment reinforces the commitment of the Ibiza Island Council and the Balearic Government to allocate sustainable tourism funds to projects that directly contribute to the protection of the natural and marine environment and have a positive impact on both coastal safety and conservation.
