From the day after the heavy rains, both ships are active, one of coastal type and the other a beach one, in turns of morning and afternoon, from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the aim to guarantee that there’s always an active unity in the port and its proximities. The service is kept in an uninterrupted way along the day to collect accumulated waste after the rains, mainly plastics, weeds and leaves, and securing normalcy in the portuary activity.
Even though the official campaign ended on September 30th, the ships have been put into service exceptionally to face this emergency and they will stay in the area until the waste is completely controlled.
It is important to highlight that these ships form part of the cleaning campaign of the coast that the Government has launched on May 1st, a device that this 2025 has has a total of 23 ships, two more than last year.
The results of the campaign show its usefulness: between May and August, close to 29 tons of waste were collected from waters of the four islands. Ibiza stood out on the month of May specially, with over 3,300 collected kilos, while Mallorca led the numbers in the months of June, July and August.
On the other hand, councillor of the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, visited yesterday Ibiza to see the damage of the rainfall in different hydraulic infrastructures and he was equally in the portuary area of Vila, where he could see the accumulation of waste and the importance of the extraordinary effort of the maritime cleaning service.
