Hydration, shade and sunscreen: recommendations as temperatures rise in the Balearic Islands

A new heatwave is settling over the islands, pushing temperatures to the limit and triggering a yellow weather alert.

The second heatwave of the summer has now reached the Balearic Islands, with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 40°C. As a result, the Directorate General for Emergencies is keeping the yellow alert active, IG-0 level of the Meteobal plan, in Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

What should you do in the face of rising temperatures? To prevent heatstroke and cope with this heatwave, the most important measure is to stay well hydrated. It is advisable to drink water frequently, even when you do not feel thirsty, and to avoid alcoholic or very sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.

It is also recommended to limit direct sun exposure between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., seek shaded areas and use high-factor sunscreen, reapplying it regularly. Wearing a cap or hat, sunglasses and light, breathable clothing can also help reduce the impact of high temperatures.

On beaches, boats and coastal areas, it is important to plan the day in advance, bring enough water and avoid intense physical activity during the hottest hours of the day. Special attention should also be paid to children, the elderly, pets and people with chronic illnesses, who are among the most vulnerable groups when it comes to heatstroke.

Dizziness, headaches, weakness, nausea or disorientation can be warning signs. If these symptoms appear, it is recommended to move to a cool place, hydrate and seek medical assistance if the discomfort persists or worsens.

According to the forecast, this Tuesday thermometers will reach 38°C in the north, northeast, inland areas and Levante of Mallorca, while maximum temperatures of 37°C are expected in the Serra de Tramuntana and in Ibiza and Formentera. Menorca will also remain under warning, with temperatures that could reach 36°C.

The situation is expected to worsen on Wednesday, raising the risk level to significant danger in Ibiza and Formentera, as well as in the north, northeast, inland areas and Levante of Mallorca. Temperatures of up to 39°C are expected in these areas. The Serra de Tramuntana, southern Mallorca and Menorca will remain under a yellow warning, with values of up to 37°C.

The episode could reach its peak on Thursday. Forecasts point to maximum temperatures of 40°C in Ibiza, Formentera and inland Mallorca. Across the rest of the archipelago, thermometers could hover around 38°C, especially in the Serra de Tramuntana, the north and northeast of Mallorca, the south, Levante and Menorca.
