This Wednesday, July 16, the sea dresses up to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, patron saint of sailors, fishermen, the Navy, and all those who live and work at sea.
FOLLOW US ON OUR SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES AND RECEIVE UPDATES FROM "PASSION FOR THE SEA"To mark this special day, many coastal towns hold popular festivals and maritime processions in which the image of the Virgin is carried on a boat, accompanied by a decorated fleet and floral offerings cast into the sea in memory of those who are no longer with us.
But why is Our Lady of Mount Carmel the patron saint of the sea? This link dates back to the 18th century, when Spanish sailors adopted her as their protector, in gratitude for the favors received during their voyages. In fact, many miracles related to the sea are attributed to her, including one told by Mallorcan naval officer Antonio Barceló Pont, who prayed to her for protection during his battle against Barbary piracy in the Mediterranean in 1784. However, it wasn't until 1901 that Pope Leo XIII officially declared her the Patron Saint of the Spanish Navy. Since then, her figure has been deeply connected to life at sea.
In fact, the Naval Sector of the Balearic Islands holds an annual commemorative event at the Porto Pi Naval Base, which includes a traditional mass in the chapel of the Naval Station, concluding with the Salve Marinera and the ceremonial lowering of the Spanish flag in the base courtyard.
From Pasión por el Mar, we join this celebration with respect and emotion, recognizing the history, faith, and deep connection that binds the sea with those who sail it, work it, and love it.
So, Happy Our Lady of Mount Carmel Day!
