This past weekend, the Balearic Wingfoil Championship took place in the waters near Club Nàutic S’Arenal (CNA), bringing together 24 sailors from different clubs across the archipiélago. The event was held at Es Caló beach as a part of the Illes Balears Wingfoil Series, which has been going these last few weeks around the country.

However, weather conditions proved to be very challenging for wingfoil racing.
On Saturday, June 7th, despite forecasts predicting high intensity winds, the journey was marked by a gentle ‘embat’ of just 9 to 11 knots, barely enough for foiling. These marginal conditions prevented almost half of the fleet from even starting, while the rest managed to complete 5 races.
“After the regatta, sailors and their families enjoyed an afternoon snack together on land where we strengthened bonds, shared experiences and spent quality time together with loved ones and fellow competitors. The atmosphere was amazing all weekend” said Jaume Tous, participant and head of Es Caló Surf School & Drinks.
On Sunday, June 8th, the day started with a notheasterly wind, which later clashed with the typical local embat breeze of this time of year. This resulted in highly unstable wind conditions: it began with an offshore wind, then the embat took over only to be replaced again by an offshore breeze. Despite the shifting conditions, a total of three races were completed during the day.
“Conditions were very demanding, so most participants finished the weekend completely exhausted. Meanwhile, many parents enjoyed the lively vibe at the beach bar and on the beach.” Reported Álex Durán, sports events coordinator at CNA.
Tous also added “the outstanding work of the support and rescue team, as in low wind wingfoil events, rescue boats play a crucial role in ensuring smooth race management and safely assisting the entire fleet.”
This regatta was part of the 2025 Balearic Wingfoil Circuit, also known as the Illes Balears Wingfoil Series, a calendar of five official events. The circuit started in Formentera between the 26th and 27th with the Trasmapi Cup, organized by Club Surf Formentera. After the celebration of the Balearic Championship in the CNA, the next date will take place the 28th and 29th of June under the organization of the Reial Club de Pollença. Following that, the circuit will head to Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita (CNR) on the 20th and 21st of September. Last stop will be in Ibiza, 4th and 5th of October, with the Ibiza Wingfoil Open, also counting on the Spanish Racing Cup, which’ll be organised by Club Nàutic Sant Antoni (CNSA)
