It is their fourth consecutive podium in an excellent first season together. Silvia Mas and Alejandro de Maqua, who also qualified for the Medal Race, finished in 10th place in the German date.
Xammar and Cardona blamed the tiredness of the World Champs in the beginning of the Kiel Week, but from the third day on they could connect with their best version and place themselves in positions of the podium. They got to the Medal Race in second position, 10 points from British Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris, who in the classification series could chain four partial triumphs.
In the Medal Race, carried out between 13 and 17 wind intensity knots, the Catalan-Mallorcan duo has entered second, right after the British, thus they ensure their victory at the Kiel Week. The podium has been completed by the Portuguese Diogo Costa y Carolina Joao, with 13 points more than the Spaniards.
It is the fourth consecutive podium of this first season together for Xammar and Cardona, after being second at the Olympic French Week and crowning themselves champions of Europe and of the World.
Catalan skipper, multiple medalist, has valued this success: “We are very happy with this new podium and for the consistency in the four championships. In the Kiel Week we began a little tired, but in the second part of the championship we have achieved waking up and we have finished very well, with very good five partials. In addition, we leave with a clearer list of areas to work on, so it has been a very interesting championship.”
Cardona has added: “It has been a week with a lot of wind and a very high level in the fleet, once again. We did not like our beginning of the championship, but we could keep our heads up and return to the podium. Now we must rest a little and then retake the season, with a lot of enthusiasm to keep improving”.
The other crew of the Spanish preolympic sailing team, formed by Silvia Mas and Alejandro de Maqua, has achieved classifying for the Medal Race in their second championship together. With a double value non disposable ninth in this final, the Catalan pair has finished the Kiel Week in tenth position, repeating this way the place at the previous World Champs.
“We did a very positive valuation of the championship -has explained the experienced skipper-. There has been a very challenging land wind and we have achieved qualifying for the Medal Race. We’ve been adapting little by little, but we are very happy of having been able to sail the final to gain experience. Since this was the last season’s regatta, it has actually been a first contact of pre-season with Alejandro, and we are already thrilled to work hard for the next season”.
