Four Balearic sailors gather in Germany to compete in the Kiel Week

On Friday, June 21st, Germany’s Kiel Week kicked off, in which Balearics Pep Cazador, Marta Cardona and Silvia Mas, all of them from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Javier Seguí, from Reial Club Nàutic de Pollença, gathered to compete in the Spanish preolympic teams of ILCA 7 and 470 Mixed.

Seven crews of the Spanish preolympic sailing team participate in the Kiel Weel, one of the classic regattas of the olympic sailing calendar. ILCA 7 sailors, Leo Barreto, Gonzalo Suárez, Pep Cazador, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, Javier Seguí, from Reial Club Nàutic de Pollença, and Samuel Beneyto began on Friday, June 21st, while the pairs od 470 Mixed formed by Marta Cardona, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Jordi Xammar on one side and Silvia Mas, also from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Alejandro de Maqua on the other will begin the regatas tomorrow, Wednesday, June 25th.

More than 1.5000 participants from 64 countries have gathered in Germany for the Kiel Week, which reunites olympic sailing classes, light sailing and cruisers. The participation is low in the majority of olympic sailing classes. Due to this reason and along other motives, the team of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation has decided to limit its representation to the ILCA 7 and 47 Mixed classes.

In the numerous fleet of ILCA, with 162 registered, the Spanish preolympic teams will participate with 5 representatives. Leo Barreto, from Tenerife, Gonzalo Suárez, from Alicante, Mallorcans Pep Cazador, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, Javier Seguí, from Reial Club Nàutic de Pollença, and Samuel Beneyto, from the Canary Islands, have been fighting since last Saturday to get a spot between the best of that specialty, aware of their youth and the competitivity of this class.

ILCA 7 class began on Saturday, June 21st, and have the Medal Race programmed for Wednesday, June 25th.

Tomorrow, June 25th, the competition for the 470 Mixed fleet, along with 32 participant boats. The two Spanish crews will be on the starting line, since it's the last regatta of the season for this class, after some very intense months between the Sofía, the French Olympic Week, the European and the World Champs.

Mallorcan Marta Cardona, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Jordi Xammar set sail as the great favorites after being second in Hyères and being crowned Europe and World victors. The debut of the Mallorcan sailor as the new partner of the experiment Catalan skipper, who has not gone down the World’s podium since 2018, could not have been more successful.

Silvia Mas, also from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, and Alejandro de Maqua, on their behalf, debuted as a new duo on the last World Champs, with a well deserved 10th place that confirms that they are setting a good path.

The 470 Medal Race is programmed for Sunday, june 29th.

The preolympic team of the Spanish Sailing Royal Federation is subsidized by the Sports Superior Sports Board, the Spanish Olympic Committee and Universo Mujer, and sponsored by Iberdrola and Quirón Prevención. Azul Marino, Murimar Seguros, Nippon Express, Marine Pool and Enovis are official providers.
