The nautical federation proposes assessing an expansion of marine protection and advocates a model that combines conservation, nautical activities and the needs of local residents.

YOU HAVE ALL OF OUR FULL PROGRAMS HERE!The Federation of Associations and Nautical Activities for Environmental Affairs (FANMED) has asked the Balearic Government’s Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, Joan Simonet Pons, to study the possible expansion of the marine protection area linked to the Serra de Tramuntana.
The proposal is based on a clear premise: the protection of the Serra should not be understood solely from a land-based perspective, but should also take into account the ecological continuity between the mountains, the coastline and the sea.
FANMED is calling for a scientific study to determine whether the current marine area associated with the Serra de Tramuntana is sufficient and, depending on its findings, to assess the possibility of expanding it.
The federation believes that this initiative could provide an opportunity to move towards integrated management of land and sea, in which the conservation of ecosystems goes hand in hand with the orderly regulation of activities carried out along the coast.
“The nautical sector does not want to stand on the sidelines of conservation”
FANMED believes that the nautical sector should no longer be seen merely as a user of the marine environment, but should instead play an active role in its protection.
“The nautical sector wants to be part of the solution. We know that we need a well-preserved sea for our activities to have a future. Protecting the sea also means protecting the future of the nautical sector.”
The federation believes that taking part from the outset in the planning process would allow it to contribute the knowledge of those who use and know the coastline on a daily basis, while also preventing future measures from being designed without taking the realities of the territory into account.
FANMED is also calling for any future protection model to take into consideration the needs of coastal communities and residents.
In this regard, the situation in Sóller, according to the federation, is an example of the need to find legal, orderly solutions adapted to the specific circumstances of each municipality for issues such as vessel anchoring and mooring.
“It is not about choosing between the environment and nautical activities. It is about managing the sea properly so that both can coexist.”
FANMED believes that greater involvement by the Balearic institutions in the management of marine areas that are ecologically connected to protected land areas would bring decision-making closer to the territory and improve coordination between conservation and human activity.

The federation believes that the debate over marine protection will become increasingly important in the Balearic Islands and considers it essential for the nautical sector to play an active role in shaping it.
