Excitement and competition at the 150 Miles A2 Repsol Trophy Regatta, one of the fastest editions

12th May 2025 by Agencies

Twenty cruisers took part this weekend in the 150 Miles A2 Repsol Trophy Regatta, a legendary pairs race for the Cruiser class, under ORC certification, recently recovered by the Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita (CNR). Boats from different clubs in Mallorca took part, as well as from Ibiza and some from the mainland, such as the winner of the race.

After the corresponding skippers' meeting and a brotherhood meal, the fleet set sail on time, with two sailors in each boat, at 16:00 hours on Friday 9 May from Sa Ràpita towards Ciutadella, to then head back to Cabrera, rounding this archipelago and then returning to the CNR.

The start was marked by a light wind of barely 5 knots, with both fleets intertwining between Colònia de Sant Jordi and Cap Salines and continuing intermixed for almost the entire course. Upon arrival in Ciutadella, the cruisers enjoyed winds of about 8–12 knots in the Menorca Channel. On the return, the wind increased to 14–15 knots as the fleet approached Cap Salines, always with beam or following winds, which facilitated a smooth circumnavigation of the Cabrera archipelago. The most delayed boats encountered winds of up to 24 knots with some waves, forcing them to complete the course in tougher conditions.

"The fleet managed to complete the coastal route in a very short time. In fact, this has been one of the fastest editions of this regatta in recent memory," said Carlos Estellers, head of Cruising at CNR. The winner of the event, both in real and corrected time, was “Guaguanco IV”, sailing under the burgee of Club Náutico de Altea, which completed the course in 21 hours, 49 minutes, and 54 seconds, followed by “S’Indio” and “Blue Flag.”

As for anecdotes and incidents, aside from a false man-overboard alarm triggered by the accidental activation of an emergency beacon on one of the Mini boats participating in the 2025 SoloMed (on the same course), there was a quickly-controlled water ingress on one vessel and a rudder breakage that required assistance for the boat “Peppa.” However, using ingenuity, the crew managed to return to port on their own, always under the supervision of the race’s support boat.

One striking aspect was how, after 150 miles of sailing with varying wind conditions, some boats finished with only seconds separating them, such as the mere 44 seconds between “Cartujano” and “Beduino.”

"Many boats overlapped in the eastern part of Mallorca and the southern part of Menorca, which made for a spectacular sight and created a great atmosphere at the club, which has enjoyed an amazing week of sailing," said Carlos Estellers. "From the club, we strongly support the 150 Miles and want it to be consolidated and make it gain importance in the national sailing calendar," he added.

The 150 Miles Regatta, currently part of the CNR A2 Circuit along with the Isla del Sec A2 Trophy and the Vuelta a Cabrera A2, was created decades ago by several enthusiasts linked to the club. Biel Lladó, founder of the iconic company Nàutica Tramuntana and winner of the previous edition with his grandson aboard “Samaruch Quart,” recalled its beginnings: "Back then, there were no solo regattas in Mallorca. We were a group of sailors from Sa Ràpita and Colònia de Sant Jordi, very eager for new experiences at sea," he recalled. "We wanted to create a solo regatta with a longer course than usual. That’s how the 150 Millas was born, with the added challenge of sailing to the Isla del Aire, off the southeastern coast of Menorca. We had a great time every time we participated, and I’m sure that in this new stage, it will continue to bring enjoyment to all its participants. It's a great opportunity for sailors to test themselves, sign up, and enjoy a different kind of regatta," he emphasized.

In the overall ranking, first place went to “Guaguanco IV” from Club Náutico Altea, followed by “S’Indio III” from Club Nàutic Ràpita. “Blue Flag” took third, with “Kyo VI” from Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa in fourth, and “Samaruch Quart” from Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita in fifth. The following positions were occupied by “Cartujano”, from Club Nàutic s’Estanyol, “Beduino”, from Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita, “Savenc”, from Real Club Náutico de Palma, “Alba Alba”, from Club Náutico de Ibiza, and “Huayra”, from Club Deportivo de Vela Portals. The general classification concluded with “Xalest” and “Formidable”, both from Real Club Náutico de Palma, and “Batzac”, from Club Nàutic Porto Colom.

In the ORC 0–3 class, “Guaguanco IV” took first place, followed by “S’Indio III” and “Blue Flag” in second and third, respectively. “Kyo VI” earned a commendable fourth place, followed by “Savenc,” “Alba Alba,” “Huayra,” “Xalest,” “Formidable,” and finally, “Batzac.”

In ORC 4, the top place went to “Samaruch Quart,” followed by “Cartujano” in second and “Beduino” in third place.

Interestingly, the event overlapped with the passing of the Solo Med regatta fleet for the Mini 6.50 class, organized by the Fundació Barcelona Capital Nàutica (FBCN) and the Base Mini Barcelona. This regatta involves a solo 700-mile course through the waters of Barcelona, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community.

The 13 participating Minis arrived in southern Mallorca on the 7th, between 15:57 and 00:42, docking at Sa Ràpita. The next day, they held a skippers' meeting and a fellowship dinner, and set sail on Friday right after the 150 Millas cruisers, heading for Ciutadella and then Cabrera. From there, the two fleets diverged: the cruisers returned to Sa Ràpita, while the Minis headed toward the Pitiusas.
