The Menorcan company Esea Propulsion revealed its PD100, a motor poised to transform the combustion outboard engine market with a 100% electric proposal that is more efficient, more sustainable, and boasts a much more optimal weight-to-power ratio. The project, which has already received three national awards in recent months for its innovation, is now closer to commercialization.
The company's CEO, Menorcan engineer Carlos Puerta, led the presentation of the prototype, which has just come out of the test lab at Tecnalia (Basque Country), a leading European Research and Technological Development Center. In the coming days, it will be launched at sea in the Port of Mahón to observe its behavior and performance in a real environment. This unveiling allowed attendees to learn the details up close, have their questions answered, and bring the product closer to interested parties—from technical and commercial stakeholders to potential new investors.
“ESEA Propulsion is the first outboard motor conceived and designed entirely from scratch to achieve optimal electric performance, unlike other companies that may have opted to retrofit traditional motors,” explains Carlos Puerta. The concept has already received the highest rating from the European Union Patent Office and, after months of development and technical work, has taken another step forward with the presentation of the prototype, which will soon take to the water.
The event was attended by the President of the Consell Insular, Adolfo Vilafranca; the Mayor of Maó, Héctor Pons; the Councilor for Economy and General Services, Maria Antonia Taltavull; the Port Authority’s delegate in Menorca, Vicent Fullana; the Head of Technological Development and Innovation at the Port Authority, Javier Segovia; and the manager of Parc Bit in Alaior, the incubator hosting ESEA Propulsion, Llorenç Cardona, among other officials.
The PD100 has been awarded a NAVAL PERTE grant by the Spanish Government, in addition to three national awards recognizing its sustainability, design, innovation, and performance. After sea trials in the Port of Mahón, the company will focus on finalizing agreements with various strategic and commercial partners in Europe to both gather further feedback on the propeller’s performance and begin marketing it in multiple target markets. This revolutionary, sustainable, and 100% Menorcan product is expected to make waves in the outboard engine industry.
