The President of the Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds of the Balearic Islands and major representant of the Guild of Sant pere, Domingo Bonnín, has been distinguished with the Timón Award of Gaceta Náutica in the Fishing category, an award that recognizes his defense of the profession, his capacity of dialogue and the respect that his figure creates in the maritime sector, result of an entire life dedicated to work at sea.

Bonnín will pick up the award during the Gala of the Timón Awards of Gaceta Náutica, which will take place on November 21st at Palma's Port Center.

With over four decades of trajector in the sector, Domingo Bonnín represents the essence of the Balearic fishmonger: rooted on tradition, defendant of the sea and local proudct, and committed with sustainability and generational relay. "Fishing -he affirms- are values, education, awareness and environment in its widest sense; it's an effort culture, of doing things well, which should be present in all the areas of society".

The major representat of the Guild of Sant Pere, who initiated his life at sea alongside his father and brother in a 55 spans boat, has lived first-hand the evolution of the sector: from the old ships adapted to sail with an enhine to current technology. "The fishmonger is the reflection os society: if society advances, the fishmonger does too. Nobody goes to the sea to kill fish anymore; it's about working to live, not living to work", he explains.

Bonnín has defended for years a Balearic fishing model based on responsible management of resources and collaboration between professionals and administration. "Our resources are in good conditions and we have done things differently to the peninsular model", he explains, remarking the importance of politic and environmental decisions on insular singularity.

He has also claimed the essential role of the fishmongers' guilds, "the alma máter of the sector in the Balearics", and of the Federation that groups them, in charge of representing fishmongers before the European, national and autonomic institutions.

Looking towards the future, Bonnín seems hopeful but careful: "I'd like fishing to not disappear and that no one could say we arrived late." The manual jobs, as ours, are essential for society: people have the habit of eating three times a day".

The 10th Timón Awards, organizaded by Gaceta Náutica, are sponsored by the Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares, Ports IB, Redeia y D-Marin, and has the collaboration of Bufete Frau, Sa Calma Boats, Portcall, Cruceros Margarita, Alcudiamar, Club de Vela Port d’Andratx, Puerto Portals, Port Adriano, Astilleros de Mallorca, León Von Ondarza Abogados, Asociación de Clubes Náuticos de Baleares, ANADE, Real Club Náutico de Palma, Bodegas José Luis Ferrer and Exclusive Rent 4 Events.
