CVPA sailors triumph in the Kakapo Open Race 2025 individual

19th June 2025 by Agencies

The individual category of the Kakapo Open Race 2025 concluded yesterday, June 18th, with the completion of the three scheduled races, bringing the total to six out of the nine races planned for the championship. Despite a slow start due to light winds that delayed departures, the day’s competition was successfully held in the waters of Barcelona.

After a wait onshore, the Delta flag was hoisted at 1:47 p.m., allowing the fleet to head to the racecourse. The first race of the day began at 2:50 p.m. with a 130° wind direction and a breeze of six knots, which gradually increased to eight. Thanks to these conditions, the race committee was able to carry out the full program scheduled for the day.

With six races completed and one discard applied, Pau Toni Homar, from Club de Vela Port d’Andratx, was crowned champion of the Kakapo Open Race 2025 in the individual category. British sailor Rory McKinna, representing the Clyde Cruising Club, finished in second place, just two points behind the leader, while Jordi Cargol, also from CV Port d’Andratx, rounded out the podium in third.

In the women’s category, the winner was Jana Mestre from Club de Vela Port d’Andratx, who also achieved fourth place in the overall standings. She was followed by Violeta del Reino, from the same club, and Mari Carmen García, also from CV Port d’Andratx, completing an all-Balearic podium.

As for the standings in the Spanish Adapted and Inclusive Sailing Championship, there were no changes from the previous day. The national title went to Pau Toni Homar, followed by Jordi Cargol in second and Jana Mestre in third, who was also declared the Spanish champion in the women’s category.

Today, Thursday, June 19, the competition will begin in the mixed double format, an inclusive sailing event where each boat is crewed by one sailor with a disability and one without. Races are scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m., with favorable weather forecasts. The awards ceremony for both formats will take place on Saturday, June 21, after the final race.

The Kakapo Open Race 2025 is organized by the Catalan Sailing Federation,  Mi Álex Foundation and Barcelona Capital Nàutica Foundation, and forms part of the Adapted and Inclusive Sailing Spain’s Championship. The event counts with the sponsorship of Diagonal Mar, Mi Tres Torres Clinic and Ribé y Salat, with the support of Barcelona Esports, Esportcat de la Generalitat de Catalunya, Hansa 303 Spain’s Association, Hansa Class Association, the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, the Real Club Marítimo de Barcelona, the Royal Spain’s Sailing Federation and the collaboration of Marina Port Fòrum.
