The Club Nàutic S’Arenal (CNA) hosted a new edition of the Proa Group Trophy this past weekend, with more than ninety sailors from various yacht clubs across Mallorca competing in the 420, ILCA 4, and ILCA 6 classes.
STAY UP TO DATE OF WHAT WE DO AND RECEIVE OUR NEWSLETTERWeather conditions were the main feature of this edition. Rain, instability, and weather alerts marked the start of the event, preventing any races from taking place on Saturday. After monitoring conditions until 12:00 p.m., the Race Committee decided to cancel the day’s competition for safety reasons, allowing sailors to return to their clubs before the arrival of heavy rain and storms under an orange alert issued by AEMET.
In an effort to make up for lost time, the committee advanced the warning signal for Sunday’s races. Although the wind took its time to settle, a light southwesterly breeze of 6–7 knots finally filled in around 12:45 p.m., allowing the races to begin. Conditions remained unstable, challenging both sailors and the race committee, who worked tirelessly to complete as many races as possible.
Ultimately, the 420 class, with 14 boats and 28 sailors, almost the entire active island fleet, managed to complete two races. Meanwhile, the ILCA 6 class (21 boats) and ILCA 4 class (37 boats) each completed one race, after two attempted starts were canceled due to wind shifts exceeding 25 degrees and a drop in wind speed below 3 knots.
With this latest edition, Club Nàutic S’Arenal reaffirms its commitment to grassroots sailing and to promoting competitions that encourage camaraderie, effort, and sportsmanship among the island’s young sailors. The awards ceremony took place on Sunday at the club’s facilities, with the attendance of Joan Jaume, representing Proa Group, and José Ramón Picó, president of Club Nàutic S’Arenal. During the event, Proa Group, formerly Renault Llucmajor and current sponsor of the trophy, displayed two of its most iconic vehicles, a Renault R5 and a BMW, which drew great interest from attendees.
