Club Nàutic Portitxol (CNP) will host the 46th edition of the Mamá Optimist Trophy S.M. La Reina this coming weekend, June 14th and 15th. This legendary regatta welcomes Optimist class sailors (Under-11, Under-13, and Under-16) as well as Optimist D sailors. Each year, it gathers more than 200 young sailors from various clubs across the Balearic Islands.

The competition will take place over Saturday and Sunday, June 14th and 15th, in the waters of Palma Bay. Three races are scheduled per day for the Optimist classes, and two races per day for the youngest fleet members, the Optimist D sailors. The 2025 edition will conclude on Sunday afternoon with a large trophy ceremony, supported by around fifty sponsoring companies. During the event, not only will trophies be awarded, but a sail will also be raffled among the participants.

Before the competition begins, the Balearic Association of the International Optimist Class (ABCIO) will organize a nautical market on Friday, June 13th. Participants will be able to exchange, buy, or sell nautical equipment. In addition, the sponsor Naaix will offer the sailors a discount code for Optimist-related products.

This is a very special regatta, traditionally marking the first competition for many young sailors. It is also unique in the Balearic Islands in that every participant receives a prize. The regatta was launched nearly half a century ago by Mestre Rafel Llinàs, a legendary sailing instructor and honorary member of the club. He had the idea to create a regatta to get children hooked on sailing, and to pay tribute to the mothers who dedicate their weekends to preparing and bringing their children to the club to take their first steps in the sport.

To ensure that all participants received a prize—not just the winners, Llinàs convinced the mothers of the young sailors to help him find sponsors. The result was a great success, with the number of sponsors growing steadily, as well as the number of participants—from barely 40 in the early editions to over 200 today. This year, in addition to representatives from numerous clubs in Mallorca, sailors from CM Mahón and CN Ciutadella will also take part.

The trophy itself is also unique: a salad bowl presented by the Spanish Royal House 46 years ago, donated by Queen Sofía of Greece. It is displayed year-round in the club’s trophy cabinet and will be awarded to any sailor who manages to win the Mamá Optimist Trophy three times in a row or five times alternately, something that, despite a few close calls, has never happened and still awaits its rightful owner.

Year after year, the regatta breaks records for the number of sponsors, a testament to its legacy and its popularity in Balearic society. The long list of sponsors making it possible for every child to receive a prize includes: Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares (APB), Ajuntament de Palma - IME, Federación Balear de Vela, Asociación de Navegantes ADN Mediterráneo,  Restaurante Club Nàutic Portitxol, Club Nàutic Port d’Andratx, Real Club Náutico de Palma, Club de Mar, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, Nautimedia Comunicación, Pasión por el Mar, MercaNautic Segunda Mano, Construcciones Pasivas, Eroski, Accastillage Diffusion, Banco Sabadell, Hotel Portixol, Casa Calicó, Ca’n Sion, Instalaciones Guzmán, Radio-Taxi Palma Ciutat, Frialsa, Centro Dental, Xisca Mas, Xisco Castelló, Palma Aquarium, AquaBlue, Mercallantas, Bazar Las Palmeras, Trofeos Serra, Bosch & Lozano, Restaurante Sa Roqueta, Restaurante Hoyo 10, Quely, Pinturas Clumba, Carnisseria Es Molinar, Rotger Consulting, Clínica Dental Manedent, Tempestalia Escuela de Navegación, Unidad Mallorquina de Servicios, Bar Restaurante Las Palmeras, Gemas Mallorca, Sea Connect, Floristeria Flors i Detalls, GM Inox, Cavaco Sails and Pep Campos.
