Check the Occupancy of Menorca’s Beaches

The Consell of Menorca, through the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Agency, has reinstated a service that allows monitoring the level of overcrowding on 54 beaches across the island.

From July to September, a team of four environmental informers will visit Menorca’s most popular beaches — which represent around 90% of the island’s total beach surface and receive the highest number of visitors during peak season — to count both the number of beachgoers and boats present.

The informers will carry out three counts per beach, at 12:00, 14:00, and 17:00, in order to capture daily fluctuations in occupancy. In addition, they will provide information and raise awareness among swimmers about the environmental values of the coastline, conduct on-site surveys regarding visitors’ knowledge of Posidonia seagrass, and answer questions or explain legal restrictions in protected areas due to conservation reasons.

This service aims to identify which beaches exceed their carrying capacity and which remain below it.
