‘Capitán por un día’, the experience to bring the sea closer to children

28th July 2025 by Agencies

Trasmed, the Spanish shipping company of the Grimaldi Group, is launching a new onboard activity this Monday, July 28th, with the aim of bringing younger generations closer to the world of the sea and professions linked to maritime transport. Under the name “Capitán por un día”, this pioneering initiative in Spain takes place during the voyage between the mainland and the Balearic Islands and includes a series of workshops and guided tours designed for children.

The program combines education, entertainment, and direct contact with the crew. Participating children will tour different areas of the ship while discovering the roles of key figures such as the captain, the chief engineer, and the first officer, among others. They will also learn how to tie nautical knots, visit the ship’s bridge, and have a special meeting with one of the company's captains, who will welcome them as future seafarers.

The goal is to allow children traveling with Trasmed to become true members of the crew for a day, living a real, educational, hands-on, and inspiring experience at sea.

At the end of the activity, each participant will receive a personalized diploma as a keepsake of the experience. Additionally, a themed photo booth has been installed onboard, allowing families to capture the moment with their children dressed up as real captains for the day.

With this initiative, the company aims to promote awareness of the maritime environment and convey values such as teamwork, responsibility, and respect for the marine ecosystem. In this regard, Jana Peiró, Trasmed’s Director of Passenger Services and Marketing, explained that with Capitán por un día,” they offer “an unforgettable experience designed so that children can get up close to the maritime world and feel like part of our crew—awakening their curiosity and inspiring a passion for maritime careers, while instilling values of teamwork, respect, and love for the sea.”

Peiró added, “For Trasmed, it is a true honor to encourage generational renewal and inspire future captains and maritime professionals by introducing children to life at sea and helping them dream of being part of it one day.”

Through this initiative, Trasmed strengthens its strategy to promote maritime activity and highlight the role of its professionals, while turning travel into an experience with educational value and future potential.

It’s also worth noting that, as part of its commitment to promoting maritime professions among new generations, Trasmed emphasizes equal opportunity as one of its strategic pillars. In a sector historically dominated by men, the company stands out for its growing female presence both on land and at sea.

In 2025, 50% of management and leadership positions in the company’s land-based workforce are held by women well above the industry average in the maritime and logistics sectors. Furthermore, the number of female employees on land has increased by nearly 20% compared to the previous year, reflecting a steady move toward greater female representation at all levels.

This change is also evident in the operational sphere, where more and more women are taking on roles traditionally held by men—such as ship captain, chief engineer, deck officer, or engine crew member. This context of real gender equality adds even more meaning to initiatives like Capitán por un día, which not only aims to spark early career aspirations but does so through diversity highlighting female role models who are now part of the everyday life at Trasmed.
