Calvià Records 20% of Maximum Allowed Occupancy on Its Beaches During June

Calvià Records 20% of Maximum Allowed Occupancy on Its Beaches During June

15th July 2025 by Agencies

The beaches of Calvià are consolidating themselves as spacious leisure areas for tourists and residents, far from the perception of overcrowding. This is reflected in the monitored data for the month of June, which shows an average peak occupancy of just 20% of the maximum allowed capacity.

The data was collected thanks to the capacity control cameras of the DTI system (Smart Tourist Destination), a pioneering initiative in the Balearic Islands and currently the only operational system in the region with this level of accuracy. Monitoring has been carried out on the municipality’s six main beaches: the three in Palmanova (Es Carregador, Na Nadala, and Son Maties), as well as Magaluf, Santa Ponça, and Torà in Peguera. Together, these beaches stretch over 5.6 kilometers.

Juan Antonio Amengual, mayor of Calvià, stated: “The occupancy data from Calvià’s beaches dismantles the narrative of tourist overcrowding. Our beaches are fully equipped with all necessary services, as evidenced by the 15 Q Quality Flags, making us the third-ranked municipality in Spain—and the top one in the Balearics—in terms of this certification. Moreover, our beaches are fully enjoyable for both tourists and residents, even during periods of peak hotel occupancy.”

As an example, he cited the case of Magaluf, a beach 1,600 meters long with a 60-meter-wide strip of sand, which recorded a peak occupancy of 925 people: “Talking about saturation with this kind of data is simply not aligned with reality. Our beaches offer leisure and relaxation spaces for all types of visitors and residents—from groups of friends to young couples, seniors, and families. The available space and comfort of our beaches position us as a preferred option for both visitors and locals.”

Hotel and beach occupancy levels were similar to those recorded during the same period in 2024. The percentages of maximum allowed occupancy were calculated based on the Beach Safety Plan. The peak total occupancy across the six beaches reached 3,372 people per day, distributed as follows: Es Carregador, 379; Na Nadala, 587; Son Maties, 452; Magaluf, 925; Santa Ponça, 664; and Torà, 365.

In percentage terms, the average occupancy remains far below the maximum permitted. The figures were as follows: Es Carregador, 22.2 percent; Na Nadala, 20.4 percent; Son Maties, 21.6 percent; Magaluf, 23 percent; Santa Ponça, 14.6 percent; and Torà, 16.7 percent.

In Torà, Peguera, the low beach occupancy allows for full enjoyment of all services and contrasts with a hotel occupancy rate of 88.5 percent in June, according to the Peguera – Cala Fornells Hotel Association.

The DTI implements a management system designed to gather strategic information that helps to understand visitor behavior. Among other things, it analyzes the potential evolution of tourism activity from both the supply and demand sides, as well as from different market perspectives. It monitors the flow of people and vehicles, and variables such as water quality and temperature. This ambitious project is budgeted at 4 million euros, 60 percent of which comes from Next Generation funds and 40 percent from the local government.
