The municipality continues to rank among the top in Spain, placing third nationally and first in the Balearic Islands in terms of number of certifications.
The mayor, Juan Antonio Amengual, and the Deputy Mayor for Tourism and Coastal Affairs, Elisa Monserrat, received the flags this Thursday from the Director General of the Spanish Institute for Tourism Quality and Sustainability (ICTES), Fernando Fraile. Q Quality and S Sustainability flags were also awarded to Puerto Portals.
The 15 certified beaches are: Buganvilia, Illetes balneario, Cala Contesa, Portals Nous, S’Oratori, Es Carregador, Palmanova, Son Maties, Magaluf, Cala Vinyes, Ses Penyes Rotges (El Toro), Santa Ponça, La Romana, Torà, and Palmira (the latter three in Peguera).
The mayor of Calvià congratulated Puerto Portals and the beach concessionaires, stating that this represents ongoing monitoring and quality control that certifies the services offered by the municipality’s urban beaches, which provide a comprehensive range of high-quality services.
The Q Quality Tourism flags are awarded based on certification aligned with UNE and ISO standards, the only nationally and internationally recognised bodies that develop guidelines for various economic sectors. To obtain these certifications, a rigorous process must be followed, verified through independent third-party audits.
For these 15 beaches in Calvià to receive the Q Quality flag, they must comply with the international UNE-ISO 13009 standard, agreed by around one hundred countries, ensuring maximum service quality and proper management of public-use facilities, including cleaning and waste separation, safety and lifeguard services, tourist information, access to bathing areas, sanitary services, and leisure establishments, among others.
The ICTES (Spanish Institute for Tourism Quality and Sustainability) is a business association representing all subsectors of Spanish tourism, with more than 25 years of history. Its governing bodies include the Ministry of Tourism, through the State Secretariat for Tourism, as well as regional governments and local authorities (via the FEMP).
