Buoy Fields Closed Due to Maritime Storm

8th July 2025 by Agencies

The Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle has announced the closure of the buoy fields in Formentor, Bahía de Fornells, and Isla d'en Colom due to warnings issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) for rain, storms, and expected coastal phenomena.

As a result, from Monday afternoon, July 7, and until tomorrow, Wednesday, July 9, the buoy fields will remain closed to the public. In a message on social media, the Ministry, led by Juan Manuel Lafuente, stated that all reservations are cancelled with a right to refund and recommended seeking shelter in protected areas.

It is worth noting that Aemet has issued a yellow alert for rain in the north and northeast of Mallorca, which will extend to Ibiza and Formentera starting this Tuesday. Yellow alerts for coastal phenomena have also been activated in the Serra de Tramuntana, the north and northeast of Mallorca, and in Menorca.

In response, the General Directorate of Emergencies has advised against accessing exposed coastal areas or places where waves break with force during the forecasted maritime storm. With waves expected to reach three to four meters, the public is urged to avoid promenades, breakwaters, or cliffs, as the power of the water can sweep a person away.

Additionally, the 112 Emergency Service of the Balearic Islands has activated the Severity Index 0 (IG0) of the Meteobal Plan, due to the forecast for rain and storms in Mallorca and the Pityusic Islands, and for coastal phenomena in Mallorca and Menorca.

It is important to remember that IG0 is activated when an adverse weather event is imminent and poses a risk to people and property. It corresponds to minor local adverse events that can be controlled through quick local response without causing damage.
