The Spanish Techno 293 and youth iQFOiL Championship concluded this Sunday, May 4, on the Canary Island of La Palma, with eight new Spanish champions crowned, six individual and two regional team titles, after four days of racing.

The new Spanish champions are Valencian sailor Martina Mantovani and Balearic sailor Jorge Ruiz, from Club Nàutic s’Arenal, in the youth iQFOiL class. Andalusians Curro Simbad Llorca and Olivia Sánchez in the under-17 category, Canary Islander Cristina Iglesias and Balearic sailor Joshua Castro, from Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, in the under-15 category, were crowned Spanish champions in the Techno 293 OD class.

In the regional team standings, the Sailing Federation of the Valencian Community won the national title in the youth iQFOiL class, while the Balearic Sailing Federation won the Techno 293 class title.

During the regatta, eight races were completed in each of the classes, except in the men’s under-19 iQFOiL category, where nine races were completed. The event featured two excellent days of competition and two blank days, Friday and Sunday, due to lack of wind. The silhouettes of Mount Teide and the island of La Gomera floating on the horizon above the racecourse created the defining image of the event.

Also winning their respective regatta categories, although without receiving a Spanish champion’s plaque, were Mallorcan sailor María Martorell, from Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, and Canary Islander Matteo Pérez, both in Techno under-13; Gonzalo Ruiz in men’s under-17 iQFOiL; and Candela Navarro in women’s under-17 iQFOiL. Canary Islander Martina Barbara finished first in the Techno Plus class.

For the Royal Canary Sailing Federation, this Spanish Championship for children’s and youth categories has also served to test La Palma’s potential as a host venue for the international events already on the horizon.

The Royal Canary Sailing Federation organised this Spanish Youth Windsurfing Championship on behalf of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, with the support of the Cabildo de La Palma, the Government of the Canary Islands, and sponsorship from Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea, among other organisations.
