A total of 13 crews from the Canary Islands, Murcia, Catalonia, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, the Valencian Community and Andalusia will gather in Alicante waters for a competition raced aboard Tom 28 boats, ensuring equal conditions and a high level of competition among the participating teams.
The event will feature some of the most prominent clubs and crews on the national scene, with representation from entities such as Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, Club Náutico Altea, Club Náutico El Balís, Club Náutico Ibiza, Club Nàutic s’Arenal, Real Club Náutico de Palma, Reial Club Nàutic del Port de Pollença and Club Náutico El Masnou, with the Ferrimax-Relux team.
One of the teams returning after the opening event in Getxo is the Natulim Sailing Team from CN de Sevilla, currently fourth in the circuit standings. Andalusian sailor Sofía Basterra says this is her team’s first season in the Iberdrola League and that the opening experience in Getxo was very positive: “We were able to sail a lot and enjoy it. We are very happy to be the first Andalusian team in the circuit and we hope more teams will join. In Calpe we know the level will be high; some of our crew have sailed the Tom 28s before and others have not, but our goal is to keep enjoying ourselves and communicate well on board, which is key in this type of regatta.”
As many as seven new teams are joining this second event of the Iberdrola League. The host club is entering two crews, while teams from Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena, Real Club Náutico de Valencia and the Galician Sailing Federation are also making their debut, with sailors from Sanxenxo, Baiona and A Coruña. The Higher Council for Military Sport will make its debut with the Armed Forces team. There will also be representatives from inland waters, with the Madrid Navega team, a regular presence in previous editions of the Iberdrola League.
Real Club Náutico de Calpe is acting as co-organising club for this event after successfully hosting last year’s circuit final. “This year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of RCN Calpe, and organising one of the events of the Iberdrola Sailing League could not be missing from our calendar. From RCN Calpe, we want to help make women’s sport more visible. We are also showing our commitment to equality and to promoting women sailors through the participation of two of our own teams in the event,” says Magdalena Martínez, the club’s manager.
The regatta programme will begin tomorrow, Friday, April 17, with the opening of the race office, participant registration and official training. The competition will take place over Saturday and Sunday, “with a dynamic format and around 20 short races that encourage intensity and equality in the competition,” explains regatta director Hugo Domínguez. Southerly winds of 5 to 8 knots are expected.
The Iberdrola League thus continues its 2026 journey as a well-established project on the national calendar, promoting female participation and sporting development in a circuit that brings together some of the best women sailors in the country.
The Iberdrola League is organised by the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting, Real Club Náutico Calpe, Club Náutico Arenal, the Galician Sailing Federation and Club Náutico Altea, with the collaboration of the regional federations hosting the regattas.
