Mallorcan sailor Nikko Palou, from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, claimed victory in the ILCA 6 Europa Cup, which concluded yesterday in the waters off Los Alcázares (Murcia). The RCNP sailor won not only the overall category, but also the Under-17 and Under-19 divisions, beating older and more experienced rivals.

Palou was joined on the podium by Catalan sailor Iker Múgica, from Club Nàutic Cambrils, who finished second, and his clubmate Juan Bennàssar, who came in third.

The EurILCA Europa Cup in the ILCA 6 class was held in the waters of the Mar Menor from last Tuesday and featured 75 athletes from 15 countries. Nikko Palou’s dominance over the three days of competition was emphatic, as he won five of the eight races completed.

The Mallorcan’s victory was only in doubt after the third race, in which he was disqualified for a black-flag start infringement, but once the discard came into play in the fifth race, he returned to the top of the standings.

Francisca Puig was the highest-ranked female sailor in the Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 ILCA 6 categories.

The women’s division also had a standout performer from RCNP. Francisca Puig was the top-ranked young female sailor in ILCA 6 and took victory in every category: Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21. Puig, who won the Spanish ILCA 4 Championship just two months ago, added another title in one of her first regattas in the higher class, where she faced more experienced competitors.

A large part of the Real Club Náutico de Palma racing team that took part in the event remained in Murcia because the ILCA 4 European Championship begins this Saturday at the same venue, bringing together 438 international sailors representing 11 countries.
