Summer is getting closer and, with it, the gradual increase in temperatures. Although in the Balearic Islands we are fortunate to have the sea and beaches as great allies to cool off during the hottest months, high temperatures can pose a significant health risk if the right precautions are not taken.

For this reason, the Government has launched the campaign “Heat can be deadly, prevention is vital”, an initiative that brings together a series of preventive tips aimed at the entire population. Its main objective is to raise awareness about the dangers associated with extreme heat and to encourage safe habits during episodes of high temperatures.

According to the Regional Ministry of Presidency, Coordination of Government Action and Local Cooperation, the campaign pays special attention to the most vulnerable groups, such as older people, children, people with chronic illnesses and those who work outdoors, especially during the middle of the day. These groups are at greater risk of suffering heatstroke, dehydration or other problems caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

The Government stresses that prevention is essential to avoid serious situations. It therefore recommends avoiding physical or sporting activity between 12 noon and 4 p.m., the period when the heat is usually most intense. During these hours, it is advisable to stay in cool places, seek shade and reduce any unnecessary effort.

People are also advised to cover their heads with caps or hats, wear light, breathable and light-coloured clothing, and stay constantly hydrated, even when they do not feel thirsty. It is also important to choose light meals, avoid heavy meals and use sun protection whenever going outdoors, even when not directly in the sun.

At home, the recommendations include closing blinds and windows during the hottest hours to prevent hot air from entering, and ventilating homes early in the morning or at night, when temperatures are milder.

The campaign reminds people that extreme heat should not be taken lightly. Heatstroke can appear quickly and have serious consequences, so it is essential to watch for symptoms such as dizziness, headache, weakness, confusion, very hot skin or loss of consciousness. In the event of any of these signs, people are advised to seek help immediately and contact emergency services if necessary.

With this initiative, the Government aims to reinforce the message that enjoying the summer is compatible with doing so safely. Prevention, hydration and protection from the sun are key to facing the coming months of heat without putting health at risk.
