Audience success at the ‘Navis Romana’ premiere, the miniseries about ses Fontanelles shipwreck

Palma’s CaixaForum has hosted the premiere, this Friday, October 24th, in the mark of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival.

The first part of the miniseries was projected in Palma’s CaixaForum before a crowded audience that filled the room fully, in the program of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival.

The tickets for the projection were sold out for many days, which shows the interest that has woken this audiovisual production upon one of the most important archeological discoveries of these last years in the Balearic Islands. The miniseries documentary shows the day-to-day of the extraction and conservation project of Ses Fontanelles roman shipwreck, discovered in 2019 just a few meters from the Playa de Palma, in an exceptional conservation state.

The president of Mallorca’s Council, Llorenç Galmés, has highlighted during the event that “Navis Romana is an example of how science, culture and audiovisual communication can unite efforts to show our most hidden patrimony, the one that has belonged under the sea for centuries, and make the whole society participate”. Galmés has pointed out that the project of Ses Fontanelles shipwreck is one of the most relevant ones that currently boosts the insular institution and that “places Mallorcas as an international referent in subaquatic archeology".

On one hand, production directors Pere Salom and Antoni Maria Thomàs, have explained that the miniseries is composed by two 52-minute episodes, recorded in Mallorca, Barcelona, Cádiz and Cartagena, and that collects fifteen months of audiovisual tracking of the excavation process, scientific investigation and interviews with the investigating team.

Salom has added that the subaquatic images and the unique moments that the series shows allow experiencing the most exceptional maritime patrimony discoveries of the Balearic Islands closely.

On the other hand, the representative of the CaixaForum Palma, Noemí Vallespir, has reminded that the first episode of Navis Romana is already available for free in the CaixaForum+ platform, matching with its premiere at the festival. IB3 will also launch the documentary next November 8th in maximum audience schedule.

Members of the responsible scientific team and representatives of the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival, Maria Calafat amongst them, who valued the presence of the Navis Romana in the official competition very positively, also went to the premiere, “a sample of the great quality of audiovisual productions made in the Balearic Islands”.
