Almost a thousand people assist the inauguration of Mallorca’s Maritime Museum

Almost a thousand people has assisted the inaugural act of the new space, which has, for the first time, a museum project to put Mallorca’s maritime patrimony into value.

The Consell de Mallorca has celebrated this Friday, October 3rd, the reopening of Mallorca’s Maritime Museum in ses Voltes with a great inauguration party that has reunited almost a thousand people. After two years with no activities due to safety reasons, the museum reopens its doors with a renovated museum project that has awoken a great interest amongst visitors. 

Palma has lived an authentic cultural party with the sailor patrimony as the main character. The inaugural party has combined live music, gastronomy and popular culture into a party and familiar ambience. 

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, has celebrated the success of the journey: «Now yes, Mallorca has a new modern and safe maritime museum thought-out for everyone. It has been exciting to see how people have answered with enthusiasm to this space that reopens with strength».

The act has started at 6 p.m. with the inauguration of the permanent exposition, the launching of the temporary exhibition «Thálassa», by Irene Gayà, and the concert of Pere Andreo, followed by a popular dance in charge of the group Antic Cofre and a great sailor fideuá prepared by the Fishmongers Balearic Cofradies Federation. 

The new museum space has aroused a lot of interest between visitors, who have been able to rediscover the permanent exhibition distributed into five rooms and an educational space, with audiovisual resources, unique archeological pieces, naval models and traditional sea professions objects. In addition, they have enjoyed the temporary exhibition of watercolours «Thálassa», by Irene Gayà.

The museum project is clearly focused on innovation, inclusion and divulgation. The museum incorporates texts in easy lecture, braille panels, QR codes with audiodescription and sign language, and systems compatible with cochlear implants. They have also adapted access and signaling to guarantee a cultural experience accessible for all. 

It is important to point out the collaboration of IB3, which has lent over 200 minutes of audiovisual material about traditional Mallorcan cuisine related to the sea. The videos, from programs such as Això és mel, Cuina amb Santi Taura, Gent de la mar, Fred i calent and Uep! Com anam?, improve the cultural experience of the museum and reinforce the string between gastronomy and maritime patrimony.

The reopening of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca marks a milestone for the culture of the island. «We want this museum to be an alive encounter spot, open and inspiring for all Mallorcans, and also for all those who visit us and want to discover our relationship with the sea», has pointed out Galmés.
