Alcudiamar boosts marina recovery and environmental quality improvement of the port

The project, developed by Alcudiamar in collaboration with the company Ocean Ecostructures, confirms the transformation of the portuary environment into a more complex, diverse and healthy habitat, favoring the increase of biomass and a major environmental quality.

After ten functioning months, the project of renaturalization of Alcudiamar is significantly increasing biodiversity, marine biomass and fixation capacity of CO₂. This is how the first scientific results of the project validated it, developed in collaboration with the Spanish technological company Ocean Ecostructures.  

In April of 2025, ten biomimetic microreefs were installed (Life Boosting Units®)(LBUs). Between the obtained results in this first monitorization, an increase of 56% in the number of species in the port is pointed out thanks to the implementation of this technology. In total, 38 native species have been registered, including five young and mature fish species. The major wealth in functioning groups regarding these structures show the presence of a healthy and stable community. 

The biomass generated by LBUs reached 82 kg, which means an increase of 20% of marine life adhered in relationship with other areas of the port where they have not intervened. Regarding the CO₂ fixation—a parameter that indicates the quantity of carbon dioxide that is equally captured by the organisms that colonized microreefs—, the LBUs accumulated 35 kg, which represents an increase of 19%. 

The results confirm that these structures contribute to transforming the portuary environment into a more complex, diverse and healthy habitat, favoring the presence of the fauna, the increase of the biomass and a major environmental quality. This progress consolidates Alcudiamar as a reference space in the development of improvements for portuary infrastructures based in nature
