AEMET maintains warnings for coastal phenomena in the Balearic Islands

22nd January 2026 by Nautimedia

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has kept warnings in place for strong winds and coastal phenomena across much of the Balearic Islands from this Thursday, January 22nd, and at least until Saturday the 24th, due to intense winds and a significant deterioration in sea conditions. The episode will affect Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera in stages, with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h and waves of up to three metres.

The most adverse conditions began during the early hours of today, Thursday January 22nd, in Ibiza and Formentera, where maximum gusts of 70 km/h have been recorded, with southwesterly and westerly winds. The warning has been active since 00:00 and will remain in force until midday.

In Mallorca, winds will gradually strengthen throughout the morning. The Serra de Tramuntana and the south of the island will be under warning between 10:00 and 14:59, with gusts of up to 70 km/h from the west and northwest. Later, winds will shift to a northerly component, affecting northern and northeastern Mallorca from midday onwards. In Menorca, the wind warning will be in force from 12:00 to 17:59, also with gusts that may reach 70 km/h.

Regarding coastal phenomena, AEMET warns of a strong maritime storm for much of Thursday. In southern and eastern Mallorca, as well as in the north and northeast of the island, northwesterly and northerly winds of 50 to 60 km/h (force 7) are expected, with waves of up to three metres. In Menorca, rough sea conditions will persist until late afternoon, with similar conditions.

On Friday, January 23rd, attention will again focus on the coastline. AEMET maintains low-level coastal warnings for southern and eastern Mallorca between 11:00 and 17:59, with westerly winds of 50 to 60 km/h and significant wave heights of around three metres. Although winds on land are expected to weaken compared to the previous day, the sea will continue to present adverse conditions for navigation.

Conditions will not return to normal on Saturday, January 24th. Coastal warnings will extend to all the islands, including Ibiza and Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca. Westerly winds of force 7 and waves of up to three metres are expected, especially during the morning and early afternoon, with greater impact on areas exposed to the west and north.

AEMET reminds the public that, although these are yellow-level or low-risk warnings, such phenomena can still cause localised incidents, particularly along the coast, in ports and in wind-exposed areas. Extreme caution is advised, including securing objects that could be displaced by the wind and avoiding navigation and maritime activities during warning periods.
