Today, Monday, August 25, began with light winds (around 5 knots) that shifted more than 80 degrees, from northeast to southeast, with storms circling the island. The race committee temporarily postponed the races and called the Optimist fleet back to port for safety, given the young age of the participants.
After a light rain lasting just over an hour, the wind picked up to 15 knots from the east and racing resumed; however, the wind dropped again, leading to the cancellation of the remaining races for Optimist Sub11 and D.
In the Techno 293 class, two races were completed, while the iQFoil sailors did not take to the water due to the lack of stable wind. This class uses specialized foil equipment designed to lift off the water and sail efficiently starting from 9 knots, so the inadequate conditions prevented competition on the final day.
The regatta will resume from Thursday, August 28, through Sunday, August 31, featuring the Optimist Sub13, Optimist Sub16, ILCA 4, and 420 classes, along with traditional lateen sailing and ORC cruising boats. The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday.
In total, over 500 boats have registered for this event, bringing together athletes from eight regions of Spain, from promising young sailors to established figures in the sport.
“The balance of this first phase is very positive: we’ve seen an impressive level of competition despite the challenging conditions. The Gran Día de la Vela – Bufete Frau once again proves its importance as a showcase for young talent and a gathering point for the sailing community,” said José Ramón Picó, president of Club Nàutic S'Arenal.
With Bufete Frau as the main sponsor and a team of more than 70 people between land and sea operations, the Gran Día de la Vela continues to strengthen its status as a sporting, social, and charitable landmark of the Mediterranean.
