On June 5th, the Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle presented a budget of 180 million euros for the year 2025, consolidating a strategic and unprecedented project for the sustainable management of water resources in the Balearic Islands. This increase of 15.2 million compared to the previous year reaffirms the Government’s commitment to improving water infrastructure and environmental protection.

Additionally, the budget allocates significant investment to the Directorate General of Ports and Maritime Transport, with a 21-million-euro allocation to improve port connectivity and infrastructure, and to the Directorate General of Coasts and Coastal Areas, which has 2.3 million euros to implement the new Law on the Integrated Management and Regulation of the Coastline.

Regarding the new Law on the Integrated Management and Regulation of the Coastline, with a notable budget, the Directorate General of Ports and Maritime Transport will prioritize improvements to infrastructure and maritime connectivity. Of the allocation, 36.5 million euros will go to the public company Ports de les Illes Balears (PortsIB), while 6.8 million euros will come from the Sustainable Tourism Tax for the years 2025 and 2026, and will be allocated to two main initiatives:

  • Monitoring and control of nautical activity (2.26 million euros): To strengthen supervision and control of activities at sea, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and environmental protection in the waters of the archipelago.

  • Cleaning and maintenance of bathing waters (3.23 million euros): To improve the quality of bathing waters at beaches and coves with high tourist influx.

In addition to services funded by the Sustainable Tourism Tax, PortsIB will invest 15.1 million euros in a series of improvement and rehabilitation works in strategic ports, aiming to modernize facilities, improve safety, and optimize infrastructure functionality. Key actions include the rehabilitation of the casetas varadero in Portocolom, the construction of a multipurpose building in Cala Rajada, repair of pontoons in the port of Pollença, rehabilitation of the Colàrsega bridge in Ciutadella, and the implementation of a cold ironing system in its outer port, allowing docked ships to connect to the electrical grid, significantly reducing emissions and noise.

A further 15 million euros is set aside for maritime transport subsidies for residents, facilitating inter-island mobility.

The 2.3-million-euro budget represents a 17.3% increase over the previous year. This funding will allow the implementation of the new Law on the Integrated Management and Regulation of the Coastline of the Balearic Islands, which establishes a new framework for coastal conservation.

Minister Lafuente emphasized that the law will ensure a sustainable and balanced use of the coastline, with special attention to the protection of emblematic architectural features, such as the casetas de vorera.
