Balearic Islands on orange alert with wind gusts of up to 90 km/h and waves up to six metres

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued an orange warning for coastal phenomena in the Pitiusas and in southern and eastern Mallorca, where waves could reach heights of up to four metres.

In Menorca and the Serra de Tramuntana, where wave heights could range between three and four metres, AEMET has declared a yellow warning in force until midnight.

A yellow warning for strong wind gusts, which could reach up to 70 km/h, will also remain active until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday in the Pitiusas, southern Mallorca and the Serra de Tramuntana.

In view of the coastal conditions, authorities recommend avoiding access to coastal areas affected by heavy seas, as well as promenades, breakwaters and cliffs; refraining from water sports; securing the mooring of boats; and alerting emergency services (112) if anyone falls into the water.

With regard to strong winds, emergency services advise staying away from stone walls, advertising billboards, lampposts and high-voltage towers; keeping doors and windows closed; removing flowerpots or any objects that could fall into the street; and avoiding parks or tree-lined avenues.

Additionally, due to the risk of falling rocks and trees, they recommend avoiding cliffs, embankments, ravines and unstable slopes; not stopping near walls, rocks or large trees; limiting travel on mountain roads; reducing speed on potentially affected roads; and keeping clear of stones or soil that may have fallen onto the roadway.
